Judging by the name of our company, it isn’t a huge leap to guess what the most used item at our studios is. Of course, it’s going to be sugar! Being that we specialize in sugaring hair removal as the heralded Sugaring Experts, sugaring is the sole item on the booking menu. The sugar paste we use is made and packaged at a local Seattle candy maker, and then is distributed between our locations Wallingford, Ballard, Downtown Seattle, Downtown Kirkland, and when we have training going on, the U-District as well. If you’ve ever see a purple Mercedes-Benz van with a plum on it’s side, you might just be witnessing one of our fairies making a sugar delivery! Between all of our studios, over one ton of sugar paste is used on a monthly basis! Now that’s a whole lot of sugar. It’s almost inconceivable to imagine what a ton of sugar looks like. But one ton is nothing compared to the global aspect.
Sugarcane is one of the highest growing global demands in the farming industry. Not only is it harvested for food purposes, but for making ethanol for fuel, and for cosmetic purposes like our hair removal paste. Fairtrade.org.uk states that 80% of the world’s sugar is created by using sugar cane, which is grown by millions of farmers in developing countries. A jarring fact is that many of those sugarcane farmers are from countries and regions suffering from fractured and unstable governments, and a lack of human rights support. They are often individuals struggling through the adversities of life while being impoverished and underprivileged, being susceptible to being taken advantage of by being underpaid, or not being paid at all. Many people risk their health and lives working in unsafe environments. Some sugarcane cultivators make it a part of their protocol to burn sugarcane fields to the ground after harvesting crops; exposing workers to carcinogens that can lead to cancer.
As we are a company that utilizes sugar for 100% of our services, we do our part by being mindful of where the sugar in our sugar paste comes from. The sugarcane used to create our coveted sugar paste is sourced from family owned farms located in Northern Brazil. These farms are certified as fair trade, which means the individuals working here are being fairly paid for their hard work to grow the things we need to stay thriving as a business.
Sugar Plum is a company with deep humanitarian roots, strong mission statements and moral values. We’ve placed great importance on ethical living and purchasing; and to lead as an example being a beauty service provider who makes that a priority.
