10 Ways to Avoid Sunburns All Summer

Justin Fogle

Tis’ the season! The temperature is rising, the sky is more blue, the water is warmer and being outside sounds more appealing. Let’s not forget about the harmful UVA and UVB rays that you experience more during summer. Most people know what a sunburn feels like and what it looks like: You turn red like a lobster, your skin is uncomfortably hot, you can blister, and in the end you peel. But let’s talk about what a sunburn really does to your skin.

A sunburn is an over exposure to UV rays. Any redness or color you get from the sun has done damage to your DNA in your skin cells. That is also the reason why you peel after being burnt. It’s your body’s way of shedding the damaged cells. If you have been sunburned more than five times in your life, you double the risk of getting the most serious form of skin cancer, melanoma. Let’s take care of our skin and do the best to protect it! Also, after being sugared, wait 24-48 hours before any sun exposure.

Here are 10 ways to protect your skin during these hot summer days.

1. Find a sunscreen that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays (broad spectrum)
2. Reapply sunscreen as directed on the container
3. Find shade!
4. Wear sunglasses that have UV protection. (Eyeballs can get damaged also)
5. A nice oversized hat
6. Avoid being outside during the hottest times of the day
7. Apply your sunscreen 15-30 minutes before you even step outside
8. Be careful of reflective surfaces such as water
9. Taking medications? Call your doctor to see if any of them cause sun sensitivity
10. Check the expiration date on your sunscreen

Sugar Plum Newskin Serum

Justin Fogle

Sugar Plum has several products that we have available in our studios to insure that your skin stays as healthy as possible in between services and tends to extend the service results.

We have Sugar Plum NewSkin Serum, a moisturizer, Skin Remedy Calming Spray, a calming spray, Sugar Smooth Scrub, a charcoal infused sugar scrub, and our Agave Fiber Body Mitt, a wonderful washcloth like mitt that’s mildew resistant.

Sugar Plum strives to be as close to 100% organic as possible. Camilla is always on the lookout for an organic ingredient replacement! The first 6 ingredients in most products are usually the big hitters.  Our serum’s first 6 active ingredients are Aloe, Calendula, Coconut Oil, Glycerin, Lavender and Bilberry Fruit Extract.

Our Sugar Technicians usually suggest the serum for clients for a multitude of reasons. It’s light enough for pre teen skin as a moisturizer, it’s great for men’s skin after shaving, we suggest it to clients for area that are having just a little bit of ingrown hair challenges.

  • Aloe has been used on the skin for hundreds of years to soothe and hydrate.

  • Calendula’s orange blossoms have been used as an antiseptic, as an astringent and to soothe skin.

  • Coconut Oil and Glycerin are our emollients.

  • Lavender soothes the skin and helps with inflammation.

  • Number six on our ingredient list is Bilberry Fruit Extract is loaded with vitamins B,C and pro vitamin A! It’s great for capillary strength.

Sometimes after our clients have been coming to us for a while, the hair starts to grow in around two weeks after their last service and is  weak and needs help pushing through the skin. The final three ingredients in our Newskin Serum are exfoliants. Glycolic Acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA)  derived from sugar, Malic Acid, an AHA derived from Apples, and Tartaric Acid, an AHA derived from Grapes.  AHA exfoliants assist in the turn over of new skin cells.

Putting just enough of these exfoliants to “kiss” off the dead skin and keep those follicles open.  This helps prevent those weaken hairs to glide out without a fight extending the service result and often makes your next sugaring sessions a breeze.

(We encourage any small local, organic business connections you may know of that might complement our efforts. Reply to email……)

I can’t wait to see what we come up with next!

Hair and it’s Removal

Justin Fogle

We have hair over our entire body, except the soles of our feet and the palms of our hands. The number of follicles our body has, is decided by genetics.  We never regenerate new hair follicles at any time in our lives after we are born.

What I'm Thankful for in 2017

April Batley

Thoughts from a Sugar Plum Manager
At the end of every year, I like to take stock in how the year has unfolded. Sometimes I'm apprehensive to look back. Maybe there was a bad breakup, illness, or an accident. Other times I'm eager, reminiscing about a trip with friends or remembering conversations with my daughters that ended with tears of laughter. We also experience transitional events: births, deaths, weddings, or even getting a new puppy. A lot can be crammed into a year.

The After Effect: Hair Removal & Skincare

April Batley

One example I often share with my guests is:
If you were falling off a cliff and I tried to pull you up hanging onto your fingertips, that is waxing. If you were falling off a cliff and I tried to pull you up hanging onto your forearms, that’s sugaring.

Sugaring as Personal Care

Monica Schumacher

What is sugaring to you? Just your routine hair removal? Or is it more than that? At Sugar Plum, we know that sugaring is a lot more than simply being hair free.

Sugaring has personal care benefits too! If you have received a sugaring service before, you may already know that sugaring is a super effective exfoliant. As your hair is flicked away, so are dead skin cells. This leaves behind smooth, baby soft skin. If you are receiving regular sugaring, consider this. Once a month you come in for hair removal and your skin gets that fresh glow again.

Sunscreen, Now not just for Summer

Monica Schumacher

A lot of our guests ask us about sunscreen -- when they should wear it, if they should wear it, and the answer is repeatedly, “Yes, all of the time, yes!”

Whether you are out on a tropical island soaking in the rays or walking your dog around a lake on a typical cloudy day in the Pacific Northwest, keep sunscreen in mind for your daily skincare routine. Not only are sunburns uncomfortable, they also accelerate your skin’s aging process.

Applying a protective layer of SPF 15+ sunscreen prolongs the vibrancy and youthfulness of your skin.

SugarSmooth™ Scrub

Monica Schumacher

Here at Sugar Plum we’re inspired by the well-being of your skin. That’s why we’ve put together natural and sustainably focused products to give you glowing and healthy skincare options available when you visit any of our Sugar Plum studios.

The first Sugar Plum product we’d like to introduce to you here is our SugarSmooth™ Scrub. It’s made with 97% organic ingredients, combining activated charcoal, shea butter, and frankincense to exfoliate, detoxify, and soften your skin.

  • Activated charcoal adds a dark tone to our scrub that can be a bit surprising at first. This enriching ingredient is adept at trapping toxins, so they are easily rinsed away; with added benefits of reducing body odor and acne.

  • Shea butter is wonderful for dry skin or inflammatory conditions, soothing and sealing in moisture for a glowing complexion. Also, where skin is cracked and raw, shea butter nourishes and accelerates the natural healing process.

  • Frankincense is a skin firming astringent and has a pleasant, earthy aroma.

Recommended use of SugarSmooth™ Scrub is 2-3 times a week, in the shower. Frequency of use is entirely dependent on how the scrub affects your individual skin type. You know your skin better than anyone, and you should never exfoliate so aggressively that your skin becomes sensitive or red.

Apply the scrub with small circular motions, before or during showering, on dry or wet skin.

  • Starting on dry skin with the Hand Woven Agave Fiber Mitt has the biggest bang. It’s great on elbows, knees, and feet once a week.

  • With water and the Hand Woven Agave Fiber Mitt, massage the scrub all over the body with the exception of the face. This is best for twice a week.

  • If applied gently and without the mitt, the scrub can be used all over your body and your face two to three times per week, and your skin will glow.

  • Use of the SugarSmooth™ Scrub is helpful as a spot treatment on congested skin or ingrowns.

If you are ever unsure about how the products are applied or how they can be purchased, ask our helpful sugaring technicians at your next hair removal service or talk with a receptionist by calling (206) 512-3033.

SugarSmooth™ Scrub Retails at $25.
