Tis’ the season! The temperature is rising, the sky is more blue, the water is warmer and being outside sounds more appealing. Let’s not forget about the harmful UVA and UVB rays that you experience more during summer. Most people know what a sunburn feels like and what it looks like: You turn red like a lobster, your skin is uncomfortably hot, you can blister, and in the end you peel. But let’s talk about what a sunburn really does to your skin.
A sunburn is an over exposure to UV rays. Any redness or color you get from the sun has done damage to your DNA in your skin cells. That is also the reason why you peel after being burnt. It’s your body’s way of shedding the damaged cells. If you have been sunburned more than five times in your life, you double the risk of getting the most serious form of skin cancer, melanoma. Let’s take care of our skin and do the best to protect it! Also, after being sugared, wait 24-48 hours before any sun exposure.
Here are 10 ways to protect your skin during these hot summer days.
1. Find a sunscreen that protects you from both UVA and UVB rays (broad spectrum)
2. Reapply sunscreen as directed on the container
3. Find shade!
4. Wear sunglasses that have UV protection. (Eyeballs can get damaged also)
5. A nice oversized hat
6. Avoid being outside during the hottest times of the day
7. Apply your sunscreen 15-30 minutes before you even step outside
8. Be careful of reflective surfaces such as water
9. Taking medications? Call your doctor to see if any of them cause sun sensitivity
10. Check the expiration date on your sunscreen
